Bottle Creek Mounds
Three miles west of Stockton lies the Bottle Creek Mounds, the largest Indian mound complex in South Alabama and a National Historic Site. The site contains more than 18 Indian mounds located on the 157-acre site, which are managed by archeologists from the University of South Alabama. The largest mound is forty-five feet tall as high as a four to five story building. There are over 24 mounds in the Delta and more are still being found. Tensaw Indians lived on the nearby river bluff – called Tensaw Bluff.
Due to their remote location, the Bottle Creek site is only accessible to visitors through seasonal boat tours that depart from Blakeley State Park. For more information, call 251-626-0798.
